ChatGPT as an enabler for people with ADHD
Are LLMs (Large Language Models) such as ChatGPT making things both easier and harder for people with ADHD?
I've been seeing a lot of posts and content on the power of AI / LLMs - ChatGPT to be precise - in helping people with ADHD with their every day life and tasks. People are using it in several ways like helping them with managing schedules, priority lists and tasks as well as asking it for advice.
Whilst I fully support the use of ChatGPT where relevant, I know of people who use it for absolutely everything. I have heard from ADHDers who have been procrastinating or been late on submitting a piece of work and have then run to ChatGPT to do the task for them. I can't help but feel that in some instances, people are delegating their thinking to ChatGPT and I worry that the overuse of it will lead to dependency across the board. I do think it's possible that these tools can enable and facilitate procrastination as they become the back up and plan B.
However, there are also incredible and interesting ways in which when used correctly, LLMs are transforming the future of ADHD care. An example of this is one study that was conducted to look at the ways in which ChatGPT was able to transform personalised ADHD patient care for children. You can read about it here: https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC10970191/
We can of course also look at the environmental impact, which is much more significant than a google search. There are many various stats out there about how bad it is, such as the 1-3 bottles of water it needs for a single search for example. However I don't think that will deter anyone from using it as the individual impact seems little compared to the ways in which we are already having such a damaging impact on the environment.
Its positive impacts could outweigh those negatives by being more efficient with finding solutions.
